Visual poetry of a field of tulips

A few weeks back, my hubby and I took a drive out to the valley to see the annual tulip fields.

Although we’ve lived in Vancouver for nearly 30 years, this was the first time we made the trek and we weren’t disappointed.

Acres of every size, shape and colour of tulip you could imagine, arranged in lines that would make a Roman road-builder proud.

I filled my camera up with photos and immediately came home and started to paint papers for my Petite Paper Paintings Project.

Deep reds, vibrant oranges and energetic fuschias were a perfect change of pace from the less vibrant colours of the last week’s palette.

The papers led to five new collaged paintings; numbers 81 through 85 in my ever-growing collection. Perhaps not ‘florals’ in the traditional sense, I see these abstractions as visual poems about the tulip fields. (I was so taken with the colours, shapes and textures of these 5 x 5 paintings, I’ve already started working on three larger pieces on the same theme… watch for progress photos on Instagram soon!).

Even better than fresh cut flowers (that fade and wilt), visual depictions of flowers last forever!
