Side/Walks Series – Fall 2021

A series in progress

For the past year, much of my landscape explorations have taken place quite locally. Along the paths and streets of my neighbourhood and through the semi-urban trails near my home; places where nature’s organic shapes and textures butt up against man-made edifices and structures.

I became fascinated with the contrast between the grid lines of a fence and the wispy ferns that grew against it. The way that meandering cracks in the pavement were juxtaposed by the hard edges of the curb. How the roughly round shapes of pebbles compared with the perfectly circular openings of plastic pipes. My daily walks became photography sessions, aimed at capturing the contrasts between nature and the urban environment in cropped, semi-abstract compositions.

‘Side/walks’ is an in-progress series of semi-abstract paintings that explore the contrasts in line, shape and texture described above. Combining image transfers of my photos with graphite, water soluble crayon and acrylic paint, the works invite the viewer to investigate more closely and perhaps, reflect on their own experiences, in their own neighbourhood landscapes.
