Sometimes, it’s the final finishing bits that take the longest. Painting edges. Wiring. Varnishing. Writing painting descriptions.
And when you’re creating a piece assembled out of many smaller pieces, choosing how to display them and what colour to paint the frame that they’ll be contained in.
As an extension of my Petite Paper Paintings project, I’ve been exploring the idea of showcasing a number of small pieces within a single, larger frame.
The effect is similar to creating a patchwork quilt and it’s been a fun (and sometimes frustrating) endeavour to choose nine pieces that I liked the look of together, arrange them in a pleasing fashion AND choose a background that would best show them off. The options were (nearly) endless!
Thank goodness for my Instagram community!
I created a whole bunch of potential backgrounds to the final arrangement and asked for help. Here are a few of the options I included.
Surprisingly, most people agreed on the same background colour! And when asked whether they thought I should also paint the sides of the nine 5 x 5 inch paintings to match, the response was an overwhelming ‘YES’! (I knew this was the correct answer when I asked, but sometimes we all need a little backup 😉 ).
I won’t spoil the surprise with the final choice here, but do keep an eye on my Instagram feed for the reveal! The assembled painting will be on display, and available for purchase, next Friday, June 14th from 4 to 9 pm at the Port Moody Art Shuffle. Come find me at the Port Moody Legion to see it (and 100 Petite Paper Paintings) in person!
