I’ve been exploring colour, shape and texture my entire adult life.
Long before I picked up a paintbrush, I filled my creative cup through fibre arts.
Knitting was my first love, learning from my grandmother at the age of six, exploring more complicated patterns and techniques with a best friend through my teen years, making many sweaters for boyfriends, a husband, children and myself as an adult, and amassing an incredible stash of hand-dyed yarns along the way (note to self, knitting and collecting yarn are two completely different passions; just like painting and collecting art supplies LOL!).
At some point, I had made more things than my family and I could realistically wear, so turned to knitting a scrappy square blankets to keep my needles moving (and to start using up all of the yarn leftovers in my knitting basket…).
This blanket has been languishing, nearly finished, for a couple of years now, but recent reflections on why I’m so drawn to the square format in my painting has me returning to it with renewed interest.
I hope to have it finished by the time I complete my 100 ‘Petite Paper Paintings’ project (wouldn’t it be interesting to show the two art forms side by side?).
Earlier this week, I shared a couple of images of potential ways of displaying my 5 x 5 inch paper paintings.
This 3 x 3 grid was by far the favourite. It reminded many of us of a traditional 9-patch quilt pattern.
Coincidentally, the only large quilt I ever made was a King size 9-patch as a wedding present for my husband!
Yet another thread that connects a lifetime of creative work…
Artist friends; are there threads that connect your work? Are they obvious or a bit more subtle?
Art lovers; do you see the connections between the work you’ve purchased and chosen to hang on your walls?
